I think I have done this before

Upon leaving Gymboree this afternoon, something struck me as oddly familiar. Meeting new mommy friends is vaguely similar to dating.  You dress yourself and your kid in your very best. It could be days since a shower but if I know I am going to met other moms and babies I jump in and get all primped up. I ask Braylon to be on his very best behavior. I make every effort to put on a great first impression and pray that they like us. Unlike dating where the other person only needs to like you, the moms have to like each other, we have to like the other baby and the babies have to like each other too. So many variables. If things go well, then here comes the awkward 'we should hang out more. Can I have your phone number?' It is always an awkward thing of who asks first, how do you bring it up and what is the other person going to say. What if I read them wrong? What if they reject me? Do they not like my baby? It can be very stressful. Once the numbers have been exchanged when do you call to set up the play date. Who makes the first move? How long do you wait until giving them a call? Then there is the first real date and what to talk about. And if all goes good to that point then maybe, maybe you have made a friend. This sounds and feels so much like dating to me. The wanting to be liked, the uncertainty of the other person.

Today, I had my first exchange of numbers with another mom at Gymboree. I really like this woman and her daughter Izzy. We both have masters degrees and both had pre-e at the end of pregnancies. I look forward to seeing and talking to her at each Gymboree. Today, she suggested we exchange numbers and go on a lunch date. I could not have been more happier. I had wanted to ask her the same thing but was unsure of it all so I was going to give it more time. Now I have to see when to cal her. I am thinking I will call her Monday and see if she wants to do lunch on Wednesday.

I am excited to make a new mommy friend. I need some more people to do things with and I am hoping we it it off as well outside of Gymboree class.
