While I was running this morning, I came across an realization, the mommy group I am apart of is extremely progressive. We have five families part of it. Out of the ten parents, four have Master's degrees, all four are mommies. That is quite an accomplishment. in 2008-2009 60 percent of women had conferred Master's degrees(citation). Our mommy group has 75 percent of women with a master's. Well above the national numbers. Additionally, we are women who have children! That makes it even harder. Two of the mommies had their master's before they had a family. I finished my master's while pregnant and went back for my final semester at two weeks postpartum. The other mommy had a master's before getting pregnant, but is pursuing a PhD. She did a semester pregnant and then took a year off to raise her baby. She is now back to grind to finish and will hopefully be done in May. I mean wow, what a group of powerful women! Oh but the progressiveness of our families does not end there. All five fathers, yes all of them, work reduced or off hour schedules in order to send more awake time with their children. That is very impressive. In a society, where men do not always connect with their young children or have the desire to be their all the time, our men are the expectation. Additionally, one father stays at home while his wife works, now he does work from home but still. Colin is basically a stay at home dad. He does have a full time job but he only has to work Friday thru Sunday. He gets four days home with Braylon. All this time that our children get with their parents is extremely valuable to them. Also, all the degrees that us parents have will have implications for our children. According to the Council of Graduate Studies, children of parents with a masters degree are better prepared for school, involved in more extracurricular activities and are better informed about world and national events. It looks like our children will be nicely prepared to follow in their parents footsteps!
